Sarty is walking away as his family heads off in the opposite direction. Though they change the character name, Paul Newman plays a grown up Sarty who wants to be trusted and loved.
This conflict is vividly illustrated by having a young year-old boy — Sarty — confront this dilemma as part of his initiation into manhood. Ultimately, we realize, the aunt, the mother, and Sarty are all on the same side — the side of justice.

There is other symbolism in the story which is also worth noting. Abner's very defiance of the humiliation at the white man's doorway, his courage, pride, and endurance qualities which Faulkner would later extol in his Nobel Prize Speech are admirable, and initially these qualities guarantee Sarty's loyalty against the "enemy.
